Located just below the Valley Pointe Estates Subdivision, the pavilion area features the Fort Lion's Community Fish Pond, Nordic ski trails,
walking trails, Red Coat Landing boat launch, and a rental facility for events or meetings.
Red Coat Landing is nestled in the river valley adjacent to the existing West River's Edge wetlands area, just below the Valley Point residential subdivision. Easy access to the boat launch parking area and ramp is provided from River Valley Drive off of Westpark Drive.
In the early 1960's, local resident and boating enthusiast, Al Strachan, built a private dock at the river's edge where he could design, construct and operate cruise boats. To honour this prominent local citizen who passed away in the late 1980's, the City erected a viewing platform near that location in 1995. Strachan's Landing now offers local residents and visitors a panoramic view of the river.
In 2005 Strachan's Landing was expanded to include a paved pathway down to the river and a boat dock. This initiative included upgrades to trailheads and approximately 13.5 km of primary trails and several interpretive nodes, viewing platforms, and a staircase into the river valley. This trail project also enabled connection to Strathcona County.
